Is your contractor certified to install Schluter products?

There are numerous products available from Schluter, but the most common used in residential is the Kerdi waterproofing membrane for tiled showers. Ashton Renovations is a certified installer of all their products and has installed them in numerous bathroom renovations around Toronto for years without any failures. The kit shown above requires numerous steps to install and should really only be done by a contractor with the training to do so. Here are some clear signals that a contractor is installing the kit improperly.

Common Mistakes Made Using Schluter Shower Kit

1. Using modified thinset mortar with latex (stuff used to adhere tiles) to install tiles, or worse mastic glue
2. Kerdi is not overlapped at least 2″ where seams visable
3. Kerdi is not installed up walls past outlet of water on wall
4. Membrane does not stick to base and walls and places
5. Corners are rounded, membrane is bumpy from use of too much thinset
6. Curbs are not filled with thinset for strength
7. Drain is not placed into base with thinset
8. Kerdi membrane does not cover cloth portion of drain
9. Drain is not adjusted properly and put in at same time with tiles
10. Drain is not centered
